Climate change is a fact. This is why there are great efforts and commitments at a global level to adopt adaptation and mitigation measures towards limiting the global temperature increase in the planet and its impact. Nevertheless, even with the Paris Agreement (2015) entering its implementation phase, the gap between the global goal to remain below 1.5° and the sum of the commitments by the States is still very wide and requires reduction.
A great part of the high production of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions comes from fossil fuel use, agricultural and livestock farming activities, and urban and metropolitan centers around the world. In Argentina, the main GHG emitters are the following sectors: Energy (power generation and fuel use), Agriculture, Livestock Farming, Forestry and other land uses.
At an international and national level, it has been recognized that the commitments undertaken by national governments alone cannot bridge the emission gap. In turn, we can see an increase in the goals set and the measures implemented by sub-national governments, civil society, companies, and universities. There is an urge to actively involve these actors in a collaborative manner to generate synergy, support climate action boost and NDC implementation for the purpose of meeting the goals set out in the Paris Agreement.
Aware of and committed to this situation and after acknowledging the importance of contributing in an articulate and synergic manner, the signatory Non-State Actors, with the support of Fundación Vida Silvestre Argentina, Fundación Avina and WWF, and global partners, see the need to form the Alliance for Climate Action in Argentina.
The main goal of this Alliance is to work in an active and collaborative manner to facilitate the correct implementation of the commitments undertaken by Argentina under the Paris Agreement by means of its NDCs, creating the conditions to include additional actions and lay the foundations to increase NDC ambition and climate actions in general.
The signatories seek to raise awareness of action climate commitments; foster the implementation of actions with local impact on adaptation and mitigation to climate change; and promote collaboration and synergy among companies, universities, sub-national governments and organized civil society in adopting climate policies, strategies and actions, inspiring and driving more stakeholders to join this local effort with a global impact.
Through this Alliance, we plan to strengthen climate actions at all levels, from within our institutions, companies or development areas, and move towards building collective projects of greater scale and impact. We also jointly identify scenarios and conditions which can facilitate actions by sub-national and non-government actors, as well as explore opportunities together to support, implement and increase the ambition committed by Argentina in the Paris Agreement.
The Alliance seeks to recognize, catalyze and multiply each member’s efforts.
By recognizing, mobilizing, integrating and scaling up local efforts and actions, we will actively support Paris Agreement (2015) goals of keeping the average temperature increase below 1.5°C and ensuring the adaptation of our societies, so that the current gap between ambition and implementation of global agreements is closed. This new paradigm calls us to work together to shape a better future!
By signing this statement, we confirm our participation in the Alliance for Climate Action Argentina and our intention to work in a collaborative and constructive manner to strengthen climate-related commitments.
