Launched in June 2018, Race To Zero is a global campaign to bring together the leadership and support of businesses, cities, regions and investors for a healthy, resilient and zero-carbon recovery that prevents future threats, creates decent jobs and unlocks inclusive growth. and sustainable. All members are committed to the same overarching goal: to achieve net zero emissions by 2050 at the latest. It was launched in June 2020 by the UNFCCC and led by the High Level Climate Champions for Climate Action: Nigel Topping and Gonzalo Muñoz. It mobilizes a coalition of leading zero-emission initiatives (official partners), representing 708 cities, 24 regions, 2,360 companies, 163 of the largest investors, and 624 higher education institutions. Collectively, these players already cover almost 25% of global CO2 emissions and more than 50% of GDP.
Target
Drive the shift to a decarbonized economy before COP26. This will send a strong signal to governments that businesses, cities, regions and investors are united to meet the Paris goals and create a more inclusive and resilient economy.
How to participate in the Race to Zero? What is the minimum criteria?
High-Level Climate Champions require that pledges submitted by recognized networks and initiatives in the ‘Race to Zero’ campaign meet a minimum set of procedural criteria.
These procedural criteria represent the “starting line” of the career, so their fulfillment does not necessarily imply that an actor is on the way to net zero, but only that they have started the process.
To join, entities must meet the minimum criteria:
- Commitment: Commit at the organizational head level to reach (net) zero by the 2040s or earlier, or mid-century at the latest, in line with global efforts to limit warming to 1.5C.
- Plan: Before COP26, explain the steps that will be taken to achieve the zero to zero goal, especially in the short and medium term. Set an interim target to achieve in the next decade, reflecting a fair share of the global 50% CO2 reduction by 2030 identified in the IPCC Global Warming Special Report of 1.5C.
- Proceed: Take immediate action to achieve net zeroing, consistent with meeting specified intermediate targets.
- Publish: Commit to reporting on progress made at least once a year, including through, to the extent possible, platforms that feed the UNFCCC Global Climate Action Portal.
